Seven days in Sri Lanka is the sweet spot — long enough to experience the country's extraordinary diversity, short enough to keep the pace energising. This itinerary is the one we recommend most often, and it's also our most-booked package. It threads cultural triangle highlights, the famous hill country train, a wildlife safari, and beach time into a logical, low-stress route.

How this itinerary works

The route flows naturally from the airport (Negombo) up through the cultural triangle (Sigiriya, Kandy), into the hills (Nuwara Eliya), down to the south coast (Bentota), and back to the airport — minimising backtracking and maximising time on the ground.

It assumes a private driver-guide with an air-conditioned vehicle (the most popular setup for international visitors), 4-star hotel accommodation, and breakfast included daily. Lunches and dinners are flexible — you choose where to eat each day.

Day 1: Arrival in Negombo

Flying in. You'll land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), about 35 km from Colombo. Your driver will meet you at arrivals with a name sign. The transfer to Negombo — the closest beach town to the airport — takes 20 minutes, perfect after a long flight.

Afternoon. Settle into your beach hotel. Most travellers prefer to do nothing on Day 1 — swim in the pool, walk on the sand, and adjust to the time zone. Negombo's lagoon is good for sunset photography and the seafood restaurants along the beach are excellent value.

Recommended hotel: Jetwing Sea or Camelot Beach Resort. Both right on the sand, both with great pools.

Day 2: Negombo to Sigiriya

Morning. After breakfast, drive 4 hours northeast to Sigiriya. The route passes through coconut plantations and rice paddies — distinctively rural Sri Lanka.

Afternoon. After lunch and check-in, visit the Dambulla Cave Temples — five magnificent caves filled with 153 Buddha statues and ceiling frescoes dating back over 2,000 years. The caves are cool inside and the views from the temple courtyard over the surrounding plains are gorgeous.

Evening. Dinner at your hotel. Sigiriya gets dark early (around 6:15 PM year-round) and there isn't much nightlife — perfect for an early night before tomorrow's climb.

Recommended hotel: Heritance Kandalama (architectural marvel built into the rock) or Cinnamon Lodge Habarana.

Day 3: Sigiriya to Kandy

Pre-dawn. Set the alarm for 5:45 AM. Climb Sigiriya rock fortress at sunrise — this is non-negotiable. The light is incredible, the heat is bearable, and you'll be among the first up. The climb takes 90 minutes round trip; reach the summit by 7 AM and you'll have the place almost to yourself.

Mid-morning. Back at the hotel for breakfast and a shower. Check out at 10 AM.

Late morning to afternoon. Drive 3 hours south to Kandy. Stop en route at a Matale spice garden for a tour and lunch — Sri Lanka was the world's spice capital for centuries and these working gardens give you the back story.

Evening. Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic for the 6:30 PM puja. Stay for the music, the chanting, and the stream of pilgrims. After, see a Kandyan cultural dance performance at the Kandy Lake Club — fire-walking, drum routines, traditional choreography. It's touristy in the best way.

Recommended hotel: Earl's Regency or Cinnamon Citadel Kandy.

Day 4: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by train

Morning. Visit the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya — one of the finest botanical gardens in Asia, with a 40-acre orchid house and avenues of palm trees. Allow two hours.

Late morning. Catch the scenic train to Nuwara Eliya. The train (we use Hatton or Nanu Oya stations as Nuwara Eliya doesn't have its own) departs around 11 AM and the ride takes about 4 hours through the most beautiful tea country. Your driver meets you at the station and continues by road.

Late afternoon. Check into your hill country hotel. Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,900 metres — the air is crisp and surprisingly cool, especially in the evening. Bring a fleece.

Evening. Walk through "Little England" — the colonial-era town centre with Tudor-style buildings, a horse track, and gardens. Dinner at the Grand Hotel for old-world charm.

Recommended hotel: Heritance Tea Factory (a converted 1930s tea factory, our top pick) or Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya.

Day 5: Nuwara Eliya tea country to Bentota

Morning. Visit a working tea factory — Pedro or Mackwoods Labookellie are excellent choices. You'll see leaves transformed into tea step by step, and end with a tasting where you can try premium grades back-to-back. The mountain views from these estates are extraordinary.

Midday. Long drive to the south coast — about 5 hours. Stop in Hatton or Ratnapura for lunch. Yes, this is the longest drive of the trip, but it's broken up nicely with photo stops at waterfalls (Ramboda Falls and St Clair's Falls are both en route).

Late afternoon. Arrive at your beach hotel in Bentota in time for sunset on the sand. After cool hill country, the warm coastal air feels like a hug.

Recommended hotel: Cinnamon Bey Beruwala or Centara Ceysands Resort.

Day 6: Bentota beach day

Sleep in. You've earned it.

Optional activities for those who want them:

  • Madu River safari — a 2-hour boat ride through mangrove forest, mussel farms, and a tiny island temple. Excellent for kingfishers, monitor lizards and water monitors.
  • Sea Turtle Hatchery at Kosgoda — a conservation project where rescued turtles are nursed back to health. Hands-on with hatchlings on busy days.
  • Stilt fishing photography at Koggala (about 1 hour south).
  • Spa day at any of the resort's Ayurvedic spas — Bentota has some of Sri Lanka's best.
  • Water sports — jet skis, banana boats, kitesurfing, all available beachfront.

Or just lie on the sand. Sri Lanka's southwest coast in season has some of the best beach weather in Asia.

Day 7: Bentota to Colombo and departure

Morning. Final breakfast on the beach. Pack up.

Mid-morning. Drive 1.5 hours north to Colombo. If you have time before your flight, do a quick city tour: Independence Square, the Galle Face Green at sunset, the colourful Pettah market, a stop at Barefoot for designer Sri Lankan textiles, and lunch at the Ministry of Crab (the world-famous restaurant in the old Dutch Hospital).

Evening. Airport drop-off in time for your flight home.

Customise this itinerary

  • Add a Yala safari day for wildlife (extends to 8 days)
  • Swap Nuwara Eliya for Ella if you prefer hiking and viewpoints over colonial-era charm
  • Extend beach time to 3 nights if you want more relaxation
  • Add a Galle Fort overnight for the south coast history (extends to 8 days)

"This itinerary works because each day flows logically into the next. No backtracking, no awkward 6-hour drives mid-trip. By Day 6 you're already in flip-flops eating mango on a beach — exactly where a holiday should end."
